We were watching tv, my mum and I. Some sort of rock band show from the earlier days and I was talking about how cool my uncle is (her brother).



He used to be a DJ when he was younger and played in all the majour dance clubs, he knows his music like noone else and even now, at the age of 55, he knows lady Gaga and sings along with her on the radio. (Not that that's cool, just the fact he's still up to date with his music).



Like he actually KNOWS the lyrics and just sits back, window open, radio blasting, him tapping on his steering wheel and everything you know. That kind of singing :P



I swear if he had some longer hair (any hair at all for that matter lol) he would still be going to majour rock concerts and just swing it around xD



So we were watching this show and I go like 'Mum, you know, uncle is soo cool! He was and still is you know!'

And she doesn't respond, so I think Oh jee have to say something here.. So I say well, you're pretty cool too! you know? Just a different kind of cool!



And she goes 'No, I'm not cool, I'm retro.'



Laughed my ass off! xD



I swear like the comments that come out of that woman's mouth are sometimes so hilarious I wonder where she got it from! lol

It's awesome when you try to understand it and actually get the point..

Like well based arguments you cannot invalidate.. You know they do not make sense, but in a way.. they do..



My two favourites are Achilles and the tortoise and The flying arrow, both by Zeno of Elea..

Achilles and the Turtoise



To set the story.. Suppose Achilles and the turtoise are racing together. Achilles gives the turtoise a headstart of 100 meters..

Who would win?



I guess a 'normal' person would first ask himself why Achilles would race a turtoise in the first place?? lol

Then he/she would come to the conclusion that Achilles would probably win.

The turtoise is too slow, probably doesn't understand the concept of a race and well, it's a turtoise lol



Well, not according to Zeno.. He states the turtoise would win..



Why?



Because if we assume both Achilles and the turtoise move at a constant speed, Achilles would need to get to the tortoise and even outrun him.

But when Achilles reaches the starting point of the tortoise (which is a 100 metres further due to the headstart) the tortoise has already overcome a distance of it's own as well.



So now Achilles needs to overcome that distance. When he succeeds in doing that, the tortoise has already moved an even further distance, and so on and so on.



Leaving Achilles behind in time.



So time has been devided into points in space and although the distance Achilles has to overcome between his point and the tortoises becomes shorter and shorter each time, it will go on indefinitely and no matter how hard Achilles tries, he will never outrun the tortoise..



HA! xD





The Flying Arrow



Suppose you're in the mood to do some archery.. You take your bow and arrow, aim and release.. If you're lucky, your arrow will hit the desired target.



Not according to Zeno.. xD



Okay, lets rewind.. You take your bow and arrow, aim and release..

For your arrow to reach the target, it must reach half the distance first (1/2), half of half that distance before that (1/4), half of half of half of the distance even before that (1/8), and so on and so on..



This means there are indefinite points the arrow must reach before it will reach target.. As a result, it will never reach the target..



(Also known as the Dichotomy argument)



Another explanation..



If you were to take shots of your arrow in flight, you would have the position of the arrow in a certain timeframe, meaning at a certain place at a certain time.



This means that in every shot, the arrow is neither moving to where it is nor to where it is not because it is still in that moment..



It cannot move to where it is not, because in that moment, no time passes, so in that moment it isn't moving.

It cannot move to where it is as it's already there.



So in every shot, the arrow is motionless in both time and place and therefore cannot be moving.



So when everything is without motion in every shot in time and time consists of a series of shots, motion itself does not exist..



Yeah..motion does not exist..it's merely an illusion..shocking huh? xD



You gotta love Zeno of Elea! xD
